Things Too Big to Name, by Molly Best Tinsley, is a compelling psychological thriller. Or is it an astute academic satire? Or a ghost story? Or a thrilling epistolary novel complete with a sympathetic protagonist . . . or is she a deceptive unreliable narrator?
The novel opens with our protagonist, Margaret (or is she “Midge”?) incarcerated for some as-yet-unknown reason. Is she in jail? A mental hospital? She nonetheless sounds remarkably sane to us, no matter what crime she committed.
Margaret’s story weaves together her past memories—of her former life as an English professor, recovering 19th century female authors-- along with her more recent past, as she is still obsessed with her husband Ben’s death. And with her recent visitor Jane Farrow (or is she Cherie Hanssen)?
Readers of all the above genres will delight in how Margaret’s story unfolds. This is a fast-paced and carefully crafted novel, complete with all the pleasures of unexpected plot twists: or are they twists? An astute reader might be able to figure out who was harmed and why and by whom before the most satisfying final “letter” to Margaret’s long-deceased husband.
