Border is brilliant. I found myself raising my eyebrows, shaking my head, laughing, cringing, and sitting upright as I was drawn into this engaging, visceral novel.
To begin, Woodward is a genius with dialogue—able to capture the distinctive dialects of an incredibly diverse cast of characters, among them a disillusioned missionary, a psychotic drug lord, and devoted border patrolman, a beautiful geology professor, a racist coal miner, and a peppering of other intriguing characters. They walked off the page and into my psyche, some uninvited, and some will never leave. Indeed, I swear I saw Jasper Dudley at Fleet Farm last week; Geri Shine and I share cinnamon lattes, and I can only aspire to the wit and courage of Brian Setty.
Every detail of Border is meticulously researched. (I felt smarter after reading it.) Underlying the story are subtle observations on the complexities of human nature and timely issues of racism, immigration, false religion, and organized crime. This underpinning sets Woodward above other fiction writers… as a talented story teller who explores what drives us, shapes us, and makes us yearn, hate, and love.
