I'm only at 20% of this book but if the whole thing is like this I don't think I'll be able to finish it. I don't know if the problem is the editing or lack of it, that maybe the transcription of written text into e-text scrambled the words, or the author just writes oddly but the propositions are messed up, lacking, or used wrong. The hero keeps calling his wife his "girl", his "second in command", or other supposedly endearing terms that are just aggravating. Her name is Alice but he uses it so seldom it's like "who is that?" when her name pops up. They kiss in front of strangers and friends all the time and their motto is "they will just have to get used to it". That might be a little funny once but the author includes it repeatedly. I'm really tired of hearing about how many times they make love and I don't care if they take a shower together and have time for more sex before breakfast or not. Oh, I forgot to mention they only have "sticky" sex. And the hero, who is the narrator, keeps repeating that they are atheists--I guess they want to make sure we don't miss that.
Supposedly the hero and heroine are super security guards for expeditions into strange lands and are always prepared for sudden attacks from robbers or the deadly Tuareg bandits. The story might be pretty good if they author would just get on with it. We don't really need to know how many rounds of ammunition they are carrying do we? Or that Alice likes to pretend she is a fire jinn due to her red hair and uses that to scare the local primitive peoples; did I mention she can shoot a grenade launcher and keep the point up? The author thought we needed to know that too.
On second thought, I'm not going to finish this book. The story isn't interesting enough to skim over the bad parts. I'm sure there will be more bandits to fight off and more sticky sex and more Public Displays of Affection (I learned in college many years ago that PDA's were disgusting!) And the hero and Alice will come out winners in the end and everyone else will "just have to get used to it."
