Every June a certain Argentine pianist arrives in Lugano, Switzerland, to curate the Martha Argerich Project. She brings together famous colleagues and relative newcomers to explore works they wouldn't otherwise get a chance to play. Momentarily unburdened of the ordinary pressures of their careers, the musicians rehearse at length, relax by the lake, and offer a string of extraordinary performances.

Also every June, EMI brings us the happy results via a budget-priced box of highlights from the previous year. The latest iteration, Martha Argerich and Friends Live from Lugano 2011, more than meets expectations. At the heart of the collection lies Liszt's Concerto pathétique, a two-piano stemwinder that brilliantly demonstrates this composer's achievements. It's a tone poem and a virtuoso showpiece and a manifesto for romantic idealism. Alongside it we get the dark lyricism of Rachmaninov's Trio élégiaque No. 2, composed in 1893 in memory of the recently departed Tchaikovsky, and modeled after that composer's own elegiac memorial to his mentor Nikolai Rubinstein.

There's much more. I like the aggressively dramatic way that Argerich and violinist Renaud Capuçon tackle Beethoven's Violin Sonata op. 30 no. 3 on the first disc, although that approach isn't quite as successful with the Mozart and Haydn works that follow. Fortunately disc 3 plays more to the Project's strengths: there's a performance-to-die-for of Ravel's La Valse in its two-piano incarnation, followed by Ravel's G-Major Piano Concerto -- another Argerich specialty -- and then the Piano Quintet by one Juliusz Zarębski (1854-85), a contemporary of Liszt who died tragically young. Lovely music, passionately delivered and well worth hearing.

ラベルのオーケストラ版はＣＤやコンサートで聴いた事はあったが、
２台のピアノ版は今回が初めて。

気心が知れた奏者との演奏のためか、ライブ演奏のためか、

導入部から音楽が、一気に息も切らずに目の前を「流れて」いった。

ラベルはオーケストレーションの魔術師といわれているが、
今回の演奏はキラキラと輝き、
オーケストラ版よりも私の耳には遙かに色彩感豊かに届いた。

そして、変幻自在の演奏だが、根底に流れるワルツは決して外さず
流れがきちんと表現されている。

演奏が終わった後、
聴衆と一緒に拍手をしていた。

今年、別府に行けなかった悔しさは、

このアルバムが消してくれた。

Martha Argerich amazes us once again. The present set of recordings from her festival in Lugano 2011 stands as a wonderful sample of great music. She knows how to motivate her stage partners to do their best, to perform in terms of excellence. She induces them a magic mood and captures back their freshness, their youthful vitality and green musicianship. Notwithstanding, among these young musicians generously invited by Argerich some veritable stars of the classical constellation can be found, such as violinist Renaud Capucon, cellist Gautier Capucon or pianist Lilya Zilberstein. The repertory is always chosen inspired and well balanced. In the focus are of course chamber gems ranging from the classical treasure (Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven) to romantics (Schumann, Liszt, Rachmaninov), even to XXth century composition icons such as Ravel and Shostakovich.

A special note on the Ravel's Piano Concerto in G performed here by Argerich herself accompanied by the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana led by Jacek Ksprzyk. The piece is fundamental to Argerich's repertory. She is fond of playing it whenever she has the occasion and it seems she came to assume it in a very personal manner. I dare say it is the most "honest" interpretation of the work, in a relaxed and intimate approach. Argerich seems create it just in front of us, on the spot.

All in all, Martha Argerich and her companions enjoy making music at the highest professional level to our delight. So, don't hesitate to buy this 3CD set to complete your collection!

I have never been able to go to Lugano to hear this festival. It would cost a lot of money and time. However through this inexpensive box we can at least hear the performances as they were given. There is some terrific musicmaking here by Argerich and her friends. The great lady herself Performs one of her party pieces, the Ravel concerto, with great aplomb. There is also a wonderful performance of the Beethoven violin sonata number eight. Standard classics and more offbeat numbers come together here to make a very enjoyable time of life musicmaking. It's as if the performers are playing for their own enjoyment and asking people to join them in listening. At their very reasonable price people should not hesitate in investing in these discs even if some of the music is a bit offbeat.
