As a co-founder of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers, Chris Hillman is arguably the primary architect of what’s come to be known as country rock. He went on to record and perform in various configurations, including as a member of Stephen Stills’s Manassas and as a co-founder of The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. In the 1980s he formed The Desert Rose Band, scoring eight Top 10 Billboard country hits. He’s released a number of solo efforts, including 2017’s highly acclaimed Bidin’ My Time—the final album produced by the late Tom Petty. In Time Between, Hillman shares his quintessentially Southern Californian experience, from an idyllic, rural 1950s childhood; to achieving worldwide fame thanks to hits such as “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Turn! Turn! Turn!” and “Eight Miles High”; to becoming the first musician to move to Laurel Canyon. Featuring behind-the-scenes insights on his time in The Byrds, his productive but sometimes complicated relationship with Gram Parsons, his role in launching the careers of Buffalo Springfield and Emmylou Harris, and the ups and downs of life in various bands, music is only part of his story. Within the pages of Time Between, Hillman reveals the details of his personal life with candor and vulnerability, writing honestly about the shocking tragedy that struck his family when he was a teenager, his subsequent struggles with anger, and how his spiritual journey led him to a place of deep faith that allowed him to extend forgiveness and experience wholeness. Chris Hillman is a four-time Grammy nominee, three-time CMA award nominee, three-time ACM award winner, and inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a found member of The Byrds. The recipient of both the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Mojo magazine’s Roots Award, the country rock pioneer has been making music for nearly six decades. He lives in Ventura, California, with his wife Connie. Dwight Yoakam is a multi-Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, musician, and actor who has earned over a dozen Top 10 singles and sold over 25 million records.

Con l'abbandono prima di Gene Clark e poi di David Crosby, il bassista-mandolinista-cantante e chitarrista Hillman ha più peso nei Byrds, anche come autore e firmerà la storica svolta country di Sweetheart of the rodeo. Parteciperà poi al progetto Manassas di Stills, ai Flying Burrito Brothers e a varie formazioni successive. Qui racconta la sua vita, musicale e privata, le sue sfuriate, il rapporto con la religione, le sue idee, il rapporto con i colleghi musicisti. Interessante.

I have read many biographies of musicians and other celebrities. Usually when I finish the book, I am not a fan of the person. This book is one exception. Hillman writes openly and honestly of his struggles and trials in a straightforward manner, yet spares the reader of the gory details. Thus, I appreciate what he DOESN'T include as well as what he does include.

His spiritual biography is also chronicled and I find that very refreshing. His commitment to the Christian faith is not preachy nor excessive.

This book is well written; not just some stream of conscious musings of a celebrity trying to cash in on his or her fame. It is thoughtful and reflective and highly recommended.

I was not so much a Byrd, Burrito Brother or Hillman fan before I read this book, but I am now. Chris seems so much like a regular guy one could easily approach and thus, comes across as very likeable.

It is to be recommended for all those interested in this slice of Rock/Bluegrass/Country history.

Chris Hillman comes across as a thoughtful talented musical person with none of the excesses that we are used to reading about in other rock star biographies-you know the usual ones that end up taking lives before their time. But as you will discover in his book, which I found to be an absorbing read, his life is not without its tribulations but thanks to family, faith and career involvement he is able to survive.
Chris writes about his time with the Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas featuring Stephen Stills, and the Desert Rose Band as well as many other reunions and projects with other musicians-truly a rich career in music. Recommended .

Proclamé bien malgré lui par la presse contemporaine (toujours soucieuse de donner un nom aux nouveaux courants musicaux) fondateur du country-rock en 1968, pour son apport aux albums Sweetheart Of The Rodeo des Byrds et The Gilded Palace Of Sin des Flying Burrito Brothers - un titre qui lui a souvent été disputé par les admirateurs de Gram Parsons, qui avait enregistré dès 1967 avec son groupe The International Band l'album Safe At Home - Chris Hillman s'est livré au périlleux exercice de l'autobiographie, qu'il a publiée cette année à l'issue d'un travail de sept années! Pour ceux qui ont suivi sa carrière depuis 1965 au sein des Byrds, l'ouvrage ne recèle pas vraiment de scoops, mais la narration de ses racines familiales et ancestrales au long des quatre premiers chapitres est fascinante. Le long cheminement de son parcours au sein des groupes dont il a fait partie, des Byrds aux Burritos, de Manassas au Souther Hillman Furay Band, de McGuinn Clark & Hillman au Desert Rose Band, est survolé avec des anecdotes qui sont plus souvent des vignettes de vie en tournée ou en studio que des analyses de son oeuvre musicale, par pudeur probablement. C'est un artiste qui n'a plus rien à prouver, tant il a engrangé de trophées et de distinctions en un demi-siècle! Il y a cependant quelques zones d'ombre qu'on aurait aimé voir développées: en voici trois exemples > Hillman occulte complètement les premières semaines de la formation des Burritos en ne mentionnant pas Jon Corneal, qui fut pourtant le batteur officiel du groupe sur son premier album (des photos de presse de la maison de disques A&M en témoignent) avant l'arrivée du séduisant Michael Clarke. > il survole très brièvement la reformation des Byrds originaux pour un album de réunion gravé en octobre et novembre 1972, un épisode peu documenté à l'époque par les magazines musicaux. > il passe complètement sous silence sa brève mais sympathique association avec son ex-collègue Rick Roberts pour une série de concerts en duo acoustique tout au long de l'année 1981. A l'inverse, il est plus prolixe, voire élogieux, sur d'autres musiciens avec lesquels il a travaillé, gardant des liens d'amitié à vie. Au fil des pages de la seconde partie du livre, il proclame sa foi avec fougue, ce qui peut se révéler agaçant pour des lecteurs athées, et embarrassant même pour des lecteurs croyants. Certes, il est en droit de croire à un miracle divin lorsqu'il narre sa miraculeuse guérison d'une hépatite C doublée d'une tuberculose à la fin des années '90 et pour son enthousiasme retrouvé, malheureusement terni par la disparition brutale de Tom Petty avec qui il avait tissé des liens tardifs mais fructueux en 2017 lors de l'enregistrement de son excellent album Bidin' My Time. Destiné initialement à laisser une trace à sa descendance, la publication de ce livre, accompagnée d'une importante promotion internationale, permet d'appréhender un peu mieux une personnalité originale de la culture américaine.
