Joe Louis, considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers ever to grace the canvas, reigned as world heavyweight champion from 1937 to 1949, the longest single reign as champion by any heavyweight boxer, compiling winning decisions in 25 matches over 140 consecutive months. He was ranked as the best heavyweight boxer of all time in 2005 by the International Boxing Research Organization. Louis' influence outside the ring was extensive-the first African-American to be considered a nationwide hero, serving in the Army's Special Services Division as role model for World War II soldiers of all ethnic backgrounds, and he was instrumental in breaking the color barrier in golf after the war. The "Brown Bomber" continued to be active in boxing even in retirement. In 1982 he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award accorded by the U.S. Congress.

I can see why Joe Louis is so fundamental sound. Too bad it's not longer, I would've loved to read and learn more from one of the best to ever do it.

I owned a copy of a magazine dated 1950’s called the same but was told to get it because it was different when it wasn’t. I collected these types of books for ages and the two that stand alone are Jack Dempseys Championship Fighting and a hard to find one called Boxing for boys by Rocky Marciano. I know it sounds crap but half of it is written by Charley Goodman (Marciano’s trainer) and is full of his wisdom.

Je met 4 étoiles et non 5 car le livre est très court et dommage qu'il ne soit pas plus exhaustif. Le livre contient de belles photographies de Joe Louis et la partie consacrée à l'entraînement est très claire. Je ne pensait pas trouver le livre et c'est une belle surprise qu'il soit encore édité.On peut le recommander à tous ceux qui sont intéressés par la boxe des années 30-40 ou par Joe Louis.
