5,0 su 5 stelle Excellent biography of Gibran, the man who became a poet/artist.
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 26 ottobre 2012
This is a must read for anyone interested to know the personal details of the life of Kahlil (Khalil) Gibran, from birth to death.

It was written by a nephew who was named after the poet and the nephew's wife (Jean and Kahlil Gibran).

I originally intended to look to the book for information that might clarify an unsubstantiated assertion floating in my family that a great uncle of mine was married to Gibran's cousin, but found myself absorbed after the first couple of chapters as the early history of the man paralled the social, religious, political and physical journey my grandmother took as she was raised in and left the Qadisha Valley in what is now Lebanon to immigrate to the United States at the close of the 1800's. Like the story of most immigrants who leave their ancestral homeland, the journey, physically and emotionally, is brutal. How did these immigrants survive in America without language and other skills needed to integrate them into their new society? In many ways, The story of Kahlil Gribran was no different than all the other immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island at the turn of the century.

The book is quite detailed, and based on primary documents, letters and correspondence of Gibran and those who came in and out of his life, Mary Haskell in particular. There is no doubt that Gibran could not have developed his genius for writing without the generosity of many who assisted him.

There were times I skipped over sections detailing some events that I personally didn't feel compelled to know about. But to those interested in understanding the details about Gibran's physical, emotional and artistic evolution have in this book almost anything you could want to know.

5,0 su 5 stelle Rare unvarnished and insider's view of a towering world figure. Kahlil Gibran, the man......
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 24 maggio 2016
With the immense global popularity of The Prophet, myths about its author, Kahlil Gibran, were an inevitability. This biography, written by the heirs of Gibran's estate--the co-author was a sculptor and actually knew the man--is a breath of fresh air among the mediocre accounts that abound. Acolytes hang on the coat-tails of the great spiritual thinker, penning anecdotal or entirely fabricated tales about him--but Jean Gibran, a highly literate Boston academic (much like Mary Haskell, the author Gibran's great supporter) and her late husband, the author's namesake, Kahlil Gibran, embraced a respect for research and truth in this modern, readable, and illuminating account of the Horatio Alger-like rise of a 13 year old Lebanese boy who escaped poverty and violence with his family by coming to Boston, moving to Manhattan, and soaring to the heights of international influence and fame. A rare unvarnished and insider's view of a towering world figure.

5,0 su 5 stelle Excellent and Highly Recommended
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 2 novembre 2012
Having read many biographies of Gibran, I can confidently say that this is the best - comprehensive, detailed, well documented, engaging, well illustrated... My only reservation is that the writers do not, I believe, fully understand the spiritual vision of Kahlil Gibran, and thus there is a layer of interpretation that I feel detracts from an objective appraisal. I believe a more complete picture emerges when this book is paired with another one, which I consider the most important book of all for elucidating the character of Gibran, while providing many details about his life. That book is  Beloved Prophet: The Love Letters of Kahlil Gibran and Mary Haskell, and Her Private Journal . For those interested in the life of this phoenomenal writer, I recommend both books.
