Excellent text! As both a woman and art history student, I appreciated that this book provided excellent resource and insight on women artists and the social culture surrounding them and their works. Usually art history texts focus on male artists with a small spattering of women tossed in, so this book was really refreshing. All in all, a must have for art history enthusiasts.

Brilliant read for anyone who is interested in how women and their art is functional in a certain visual culture. Different chapters talk about different time period and its women artists and their struggle and how gender biased societies responded to it. Whitney Chadwick's throughly researched book glorifies women artists of different eras. While discussing in a global context she doesn't forget to mention the individualistic aspect of certain artists and their personal reasons behind making art. Being entirely western is, I think , the only problem to me, which is pretty obvious and won't become an issue to people who are totally interested in western art or western readers.
