A spine-chilling ghost story with a thrilling mystery at its heart

WINNER OF THE EXETER NOVEL PRIZE

Alone in the world, Elspeth Swansome has taken the position of nanny to a family on the remote Scottish island of Skelthsea.

Her charge, Mary, is a troubled child. Distracted and secretive, she hasn't uttered a word since the sudden death of her twin, William - just days after their former nanny disappeared.

With Mary defiantly silent, Elspeth turns to the islanders. But no one will speak of what happened to William. Just as no one can explain the hypnotic lullabies sung in empty corridors. Nor the strange dolls that appear in abandoned rooms.

Nor the faint whistling that comes in the night . . .

As winter draws in and passage to the mainland becomes impossible, Elspeth finds herself trapped.

But is this house haunted by the ghosts of the past?

OR THE SECRETS OF THE LIVING..?

Chilling, twisty and emotionally gripping, The Whistling is an atmospheric page-turner with shades of the classics, yet a unique character of its own. Perfect for fans of Susan Hill and Laura Purcell.

A dark, slow-burning story with some intriguing characters, set on a small island in Scotland. More mystery than horror, it keeps you hooked as the story is gradually revealed. With ghostly presences and strange goings-on, it's a great read for this time of year!

5,0 su 5 stelle A restless seacoast, moonlit nights, and wailing wind adds to a sense of unease and creeping evil.

The Whistling kept me turning the pages. The lonely setting of a restless seacoast, brooding mansion, and wailing winds on moonlit nights enhanced the sense of unease and creeping evil.

So far, I only read 37 pages out of 370, but the story looks great, it has drawn me...it's oozing creepiness...like watching one of british crime dramas, convincing characters...I can't wait to get to work...it's night shift...so I can spend half the time reading this...

5,0 su 5 stelle Creepy, Atmospheric And Totally Addictive
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 16 dicembre 2021
The story is set in 1860 Scotland on the fictional isle of Skelthsea. What better period of history to place a good old ghost story! When I was a short way into the book I felt the need to check out some pictures of the 1860s and this had me even more invested in the story!

The story is cleverly plotted, engaging and atmospheric, the author skilfully puts a certain voice in your head which creates the tone and atmosphere - I’m not sure if I’m describing that correctly but let’s just say I felt like I was there with the main character, experiencing all of the strange goings-on and feeling the same feelings! Needless to say, I may have spooked myself a few times.

The story unfolds at the perfect pace, we don’t get too much too soon or too little too late. It’s difficult to describe the plot without giving too much away, so I will be extra careful here! I literally just want to tell you the full story because this is such a fantastic book!

Our main character is called ‘Elspeth Swansome’ a young woman who has had her fair share of heartache, she takes a job as a nanny in order to escape her own demons. I loved this character so much, she is so human and down to earth but she is also very curious!

Her job is to look after young ‘Mary’ who has also been through lots of turmoil in her short life. Despite having some strange feelings about the house on her arrival, Elspeth seems to settle in rather well to begin with, but it is not long before strange and spooky occurrences begin happening!

Disembodied whistling can be heard in empty rooms, possessions appear to have moved around without assistance and possibly most unnerving of all are the dolls and stones that keep appearing!

Each character was unique, a little spooky and also interesting. The way the story was wrapped up at the end was remarkable, I absolutely adored and actually applauded the final paragraph!

What an amazing read! Highly recommended! I’m really looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
