L'autore

Rainer Maria Rilke was born in 1875 in Prague. He studied literature, art history and philosophy in both Munich and Prague, and is often considered one of the German language's greatest 20th century poets. His two most famous verse sequences are the Sonnets to Orpheus and the Duino Elegies; his two most famous prose works are the Letters to a Young Poet and the semi-autobiographical The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge.

Libro breve ma stupendo. L’autore descrive con grande accuratezza e saggezza aspetti che riguardano l’animo di ogni essere umano, ma anche sentimenti che affliggono lui nello specifico, il tutto scritto con un innata semplicità e naturalezza.

This was one of my favorite classics. The prose is so stunning that you can definitely tell it was written by a poet, and the advice he provides is useful and applicable to anyone's life if you're open to it. Great book!

This was probably the first classic piece of writing that I picked up at the right time. I would read a letter and meditate and take notes. Most of the advice here I still receive today from my therapists and it was nice seeing it written so poetically. My first pick from Rilke’s collection and I intend on reading more.

Nothing to dislike. As a 74 year old poet, I am reminded by Rilke that I have much to offer the public and, more to the point, the writing public. Rilke accepts the mantel of mentor seriously and befriends the questioning fan.

He makes clear that poets don't make money, but they do make a significant contribution to readers and to the literary world. He does it without preaching. I could feel myself on a park bench, at a coffee house, as Rilke reaches out to the young questioner. "My books as soon as they are published are no longer mine." What writer has not pondered wanting to give a book to a friend, to share, but been constrained by the need to conserve scarce resources and save the books for buying customers.

I could go on, but one more quote: "...in the deepest and most important matters, we are unspeakably alone." There is the heart of the poet, the recognizing that only he can probe a being well, and he has to do it alone. Superb short reminder of the burden and glory of writing.
